Technical analysis.
The opening sequence starts with a very loud noise, diegetic sound which always scares me when i watch it on top of the black screen with a name of the movie "Requiem for a dream" on it. For me this sound reminds of the door/gate/something closing, which might symbolise the theme of the film. It is followed by a medium close up of a face of one of the main characters - the black man. After we can see a shot of the main character with an old TV. The flat looks quite poor, it is dark and has almost no furniture in it. Now also no TV.
When the main characters leave the apartment the wide angle shot is used to show the location, tilt right to a 9 women sit in a row by the house, I can suggest that they are the neighbours.
They say "hello" but give them judge full looks. Ladies don't seem to be very surprised by what the see which gives us a reason to suppose that this is happening not for the first time.
Than we can see two guys walking around the streets carrying the TV, the streets are quite empty, most of them are completely empty.
I think that the fact that in some of the shots main characters were filmed from low angle and in some from high angle emphasises their falls and rises throughout the film.
There are a few shots through the objects.
Most of the shots have very good composition, they show perspective or show characters through some objects.
The main characters are smiling and laughing which contrasts with the diegetic sound - a remix of the song written by Mozart, which is very dramatic and sad.
The credits in this opening sequence are very simple - it`s just cut shots on a black background. The font is simple too - it is white and in the end "dilutes" into the black background (transition effects)
The title sequence ends with the same sound as it has started with and a writing "SUMMER"
Film analysis
I think that the film has a few main themes - love, addiction, loneliness and risks, whether they should be taken or not.
I found this the trial of the relationships very interesting - what is stronger addiction or love. Addiction has won. In the whole The film is very truthful, they don't exaggerate things, they just show people the truth. The truth about life, what can happen just to normal people, that life is mean and I`m sure main characters thought as all the people in general that "Oh no! It will never happen to me!"
What I like the most about this film and this genre of films is that they make you think. It makes you think about how people`s dreams, expectations and the whole future life is being destroyed.
